Welcome

My name's David Gibson and I'll be your training facilitator for your workshop, 'Looking At Live Virtual Training Differently'.

Your training website contains all the information that you need for our time together including:

Below is a short video I thought you might find useful in terms of preparing for your workshop.

Your workshop is made up of:

8 live virtual episodes, each one looking at a different part of training and training design.
1 Optional self-Learning assignment to help you determine 'What Content Works Best Where'.

Please have a workshop or piece of content that you feel will work in the virtual world (webinar or digital lesson) that you can develop during our time together. Applying ideas directly to your own content does 2 things:

It helps embed your learning.
You leave with a completed piece of content ready to go.

Below is a tab for each day we will be working together. It contains the handouts that you'll need during your training, so please have these available - either printed or in PowerPoint at the start of each episode.

We will be using MS Teams for your workshop and I'll send you meeting invites.

Episode 2

Separating The Need-To-Know Content From The Nice-To-Know Content

Date - Tuesday 14 May 2024
Start time - 11:00 CET (10:00 BST UK time)
Duration - 90-Minutes

This episode will take you along the path of being able to decide what training can and cannot help achieve and from that, whether training is really the solution to what you (and the organisation) currently see as a performance gap – because training is not the solution to everything.

If training is going to be the solution, then you’ll write the aim of the training. With that aim in mind, we’ll then use a matrix to select the key content that the business needs your learners to start using that they are not using now.

Task to complete

Use the Priority Matrix to separate the Need-to-Know content from the Nice-to-Know content of the workshop we are re-designing together.

21 May - Objectives

Episode 3

How To Write Behavioural Based Objective

Date - Tuesday 21 May 2024

Now that you've identified the key content for your training it’s time to write the objective for each of those pieces of content. These need to be Observable and Measurable. But how?

Task to complete

Write the objectives for each training module ie each topic that last around 45-minutes and that score high on the Priority Matrix.
Convert Objectives into WIIFM's or Challenges (or a mix of course).

By completing this bonus module, you'll be able to use a simple flow-chart to select the ideal transfer method for each piece of your content - removing any guesswork.

It's ideal if you are involved in the design and development of training modules.

Live Virtual Training - Priming, Opening and Close

Learner centred opening activities that engage your learners from the moment their live training starts.
Closing techniques that bring everything together and encourage learners to create an action list of new techniques to apply back in the workplace.

Episode 6

The Learning Cycle

Let's look at converting those objectives into Learner Centred training modules. Using the Learning Cycle gives you a structure to follow for any transfer method you're using ie Digital Lesson, eLearning, Live Virtual Training, Face-to-Face.

Task to complete

Design another module that starts with the objective and then you design the Preparation, Presentation, Practice (70-80% learner doing) and Performance phases. Ideally this will be a piece of content that will work in the virtual world.

Episode 8

How To Design Digital Lessons

Date - Tuesday 18 June 2024

Duration - 120-Minutes

You’ve used your flow chart to determine ‘What Content Goes Where’ and identified that your content doesn’t include physical skills and is a linear process so will work well as a digital lesson.

But, how do you go about designing a digital lesson rather than a presentation?
